Asbestos Exposure
Asbestos, a fibrous mineral, was used in many industries before it was found to cause cancer. It was valued for its heat and chemical resistance, and ability not to conduct electricity.
A Brief History of Asbestos
Although asbestos has been used in the United States since before the turn of the 20th century, it was used much more extensively from World War II on. Up until recently, asbestos was used in construction, shipbuilding, and steel making. It was also frequently used by chemical, power plant, and oil refinery workers. Workers in these and other industries that used asbestos on a regular basis are those most likely to suffer its harmful effects. People whose homes, schools, or office buildings are made with asbestos-containing flooring, walls, or ceilings may also be at risk. Finally, wives, children, and grandchildren of people exposed to asbestos are at risk to develop asbestos disease.

Why Asbestos Is Dangerous
Asbestos fibers are dangerous when inhaled. Because they are not easily broken down by the body, the fibers remain in the lungs where they cause scar tissue to form. This scar tissue reduces the amount of oxygen that can be taken in by the body. Along with this comes chronic shortness of breath and frequent lung infections. The condition in which asbestos causes scar tissue to build up in the lungs is called asbestosis and is just one of the harmful side effects that can be caused by asbestos exposure.

Mesothelioma
Asbestos exposure can also cause mesothelioma, a cancer of the pleura (the lining of the chest wall, lungs, and diaphragm) or the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity). Lung cancer and other types of cancer have also been associated with asbestos exposure. In most cases, mesothelioma or other types of cancer do not show up for as many as fifteen to sixty years after the person was first exposed.
